Unveiling the Unique World of Sparks

I grew up with my head in the stars—sometimes literally, lying in the grass at night, and sometimes buried in the pages of science fiction that made the impossible feel just within reach. Those stories didn’t just entertain me; they rewired the way I see the world, sparking questions about what could be, what should be, and where we might be headed.

Somewhere along the way, I started writing my own stories. I want to create stories and reflections that blend imagination with reality, and hopefully leave you with more questions than answers. My aim isn’t to predict the future, but to invite you to think about it, to challenge the familiar, and maybe to see your own world a little differently.

The Author's Journey

My journey as an author is as fascinating as the worlds I create, Growing up, I was always drawn to stories that pushed the boundaries of imagination. My love for science fiction began at an early age, inspired by classic authors and films. A science fiction compendium of stories from greats like Vonnegut, Updike, Bradbury, and Asmiov, among many others sparked my interests early in life. I devoured books with unique positis on our own realities like 1984, and Brave New World, and became fascinated by new world creators like Douglas Adams and Stephen King.

Films that were based in true-to-life settings like D.A.R.Y.L, The Abyss, E.T., Weird Science, Leviathan, and Inner Space left me wondering what those worlds were really like, so close to our own, yet slightly different. Initially I would create stories in my head, see the images come to life in my imagination and flow through a story like a dream. It wasn't until much later in life that would put pen to paper and begin to write down these ideas.

After years of writing for other, I finally worked on my own craft and published my first novel, which has quickly gained attention for its originality and depth.

Driven by passion and sustained by perseverance, I pour my heart, imagination, and love for the story into every page. Hopefully a quiet but powerful reminder to aspiring writers that dedication can turn vision into reality.

The World of Sparks

One thing that has been brought up from multiple people who have read this book is that there is exceptional world-building. I have meticulously crafted universe that feels both expansive and intimate. True-to-life, but slightly beyond the reach of the current reality.

• Detailed Settings: I wanted to create the worlds I saw in my own imagination. From the campus settings of the labs and halls, to Nara's apartment, and the building and landscape that would become the setting for Sparks NDS. The details matter, but only just enough to let your imagination take the reigns. Can you see the dust particles floating through the sun rays that shine through the high windows of the machine lab? Can you smell the distinct, dark woody, and bright citrus scents of coffee wafting through the air in the coffee shop? Those ideas should bring you into the world of Sparks and let you sit alongside the characters.

  
  

• Cultural and Societal Struggles: The cultural and societal struggles that we currently see in America play deeply into this world. The start up world is largely made up of white men, but I wanted to shake this up. I want to highlight the efforts of women while putting up a reflection of how women often gone unnoticed, ignored, and even bullied. This is to bring attention to the struggles that currently plague many women in boardrooms and school institutions. Moreover, I wanted to extend that idea into the world of Nara, her colleagues, and the creation of AL to add layers of complexity and realism. Familial struggles, power struggles, and even business challenges all come to light, these ideas all shape who AL will become. Will AL be a reflection of his environment?

  
  

• Innovative Technology: The technology in these novels is not just a backdrop; it plays a crucial role in the plot. Whether it's advanced technology, advanced AI, or the development of shared neural networks, I use these imaginative concepts to challenge my readers to think about the future. In our current world of developing technologies, it is not so far off to think we may, in the near future, have a realistic robot (please don't be fooled by AI images no matter what people say we do not have these yet - not anywhere). AI is still in nascent stages, and we have quite a distance to go before they can actually perform complex actions. But innovation and technology is moving quickly and it AI platforms improve every day. However, in the scheme of things, they aren't likely to replace the need for human people - no matter what the scare mongers may tell you. Or will they?

  
  

These elements combine to create immersive experiences that draw readers in and keep them turning the pages.

Compelling Characters

Compelling characters make novels. I wanted mine to feel real, and be well-developed and relatable, facing moral dilemmas that resonate with my readers.

• Diverse Cast: My characters come from various backgrounds, each bringing their unique perspectives to the story. This diversity enriches the narrative and allows for a broader exploration of themes. These distinct characters should feel like people you know or have met, making it easier to relate to the struggles of Danny and his father; Nara and her genius, and Stanley and his infatuation.

  
  

• Complex Motivations: My characters are not simply good or evil. They have complex motivations that drive their actions, making them feel real and relatable.

  
  

• Growth Arcs: Many of my characters undergo significant growth throughout the story. Readers witness their struggles and triumphs, creating a deeper emotional connection.

  
  

By focusing on character development, I want to ensure that readers are invested in the outcomes of her stories.

Thought-Provoking Themes

I believe that if you really enjoy a book it often makes you think critically about society and the future.

• Ethics of Technology: My stories delve into the ethical implications of advanced technology. I specifically raise questions about AI, surveillance, and the impact of technology on human relationships. With my experience in AI training, working in AI platforms, and understanding the significant way tech companies are constantly monitoring people, I think it is important that we question motives, understand more about the technology we are encouraged to use, and make informed decisions.

  
  

• Identity and Belonging: Themes of identity and belonging are prevalent in my work. My characters often grapple with their sense of self in a rapidly changing world. I think this is something we all struggle with. Many of us question our relevance, wonder about a greater purpose we may or may not be fulfilling. It's human nature, but I think it's also something that AI as it develops will encounter. What does that look like and how might that affect humans is a key element in the Sparks Set.

  
  

I look to these themes not only entertain but also to encourage readers to reflect on their own lives and the world around them.

Engaging Writing Style

My readers have told me time and time again how real my books feel. They automatically want to know what happens next. I wanted to be sure that my writing flows effortlessly for readers. Key things I look at when writing:

• Vivid Descriptions: I use descriptive language to paint a clear picture of the settings and characters, allowing my readers to immerse themselves fully in the story.

  
  

• Pacing: The pacing of my novels is well-balanced, with moments of tension and reflection. I aim to keep readers engaged and eager to see what happens next.

  
  

• Dialogue: I use a lot of natural and authentic dialog in my books. Characters speak in ways that reflect their personalities, making interactions believable. With my background in TV and film, I often start out creating my books like a script. I'll go in and add all the other details later.

  
  

This combination of style elements I hope make my novels a pleasure to read. More than anything a book should evoke emotion and a feeling that you belong in that world as well.
